課程概述

Course Description
Based on Foucault's notion of disciplinary power in biopolitics, this seminar sets to explore the ways in which intention can effect/ shape/construct the body and the ideology/discipline that lies in the background of that intention.
The first part of this seminar will go through the history of body, or more specifically, the history of the perception of body, i.e. from Greco-Roman, Middle Age, Renaissance, the Enlightment, Victorian era, to early 20th century of modernity, late capitalism or even posthumanism.
The second part will focus on the expectation and the training people impose on their bodies. The birth of “normalcy” will be traced along with the evolution of the standard of normalcy itself. Practices like body-building, diet, marathon, martial-arts, yoga and the time-table, motivation, and spirit involved will be explored.
The third part will address the body in socio-political context. Starting from the interplay of the dominant, scientific-biological body and the relatively recent sociology of body, this part generally follows Foucault's line of thinking and will go through ideas like population, public hygiene, eugenics, and finally the utopia/dystopia of Holocaust.
Other issues like sexuality and eroticism will also be covered, though not as detailed.

Course Objectives
The underlying focus of this course is the “voluntary” training imposed by the subject and carried out on the body/ bodies, as well as the disciplinary power underneath the practices. Therefore this seminar is planned to familiarize students with the general contexts surrounding or even prompting such bodies, and critically examine the ways the body has been viewed.
